U.S. Job Openings Stay at 7.3 Million as Hiring Slips in July

U.S. employers had about 7.3 million job openings at the end of July 2026, little changed from June, while actual hiring eased to about 5.1 million, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released September 1. For professionals assessing the U.S. labor market, the report points to continued openings but softer hiring activity in several sectors – including professional and business services.

What changed in the July job market?

BLS estimated 7.271 million job openings, compared with a revised 7.182 million in June. The job-openings rate was 4.4%.

Hires fell from about 5.332 million in June to 5.054 million in July, while total separations declined from 5.337 million to 5.072 million. BLS characterized all three national movements as little changed statistically.

The industry detail is more useful for some readers. Hiring in professional and business services fell by 188,000during July. That broad category includes many consulting, technical and corporate-service occupations relevant to Indian professionals, although JOLTS does not provide an India-specific or visa-specific breakdown.

Durable goods manufacturing, meanwhile, recorded 76,000 more job openings.

What happened to quits and layoffs?

The number of people voluntarily quitting jobs declined to approximately 3.1 million, with a quits rate of 1.9%. BLS notes that the quits rate can provide a signal of worker’s willingness or ability to leave jobs voluntarily.

Layoffs and discharges were approximately 1.7 million, with a 1.0% rate. Finance and insurance recorded 22,000 fewer layoffs and discharges during July.

A lower quits figure is not automatically proof that workers are pessimistic. It is one labor-market signal among several, and the monthly estimates are subject to revision.

Why does this matter to Indian professionals and visa holders?

For U.S. citizens and permanent residents, softer hiring can affect salary negotiations and the time needed to change jobs.

Employment-based visa holders can face a second consideration, immigration status may depend on maintaining qualifying employment. The JOLTS report does not measure H-1B layoffs, sponsorship availability or how quickly sponsored workers find replacement jobs.
